Where were you born and raised?
I was born and raised in East Meadow, Long Island, in a house that my dad grew up in! I went to high school in East Meadow, as well.
Did you play any sports growing up?
I played a little tennis in high school. I was the captain of the team. And about every other weekend during the winter our family would go skiing. I learned to ski at Windham. We also went to Jiminy Peak a lot. Unfortunately, I don’t ski as much anymore. It’s hard to keep up with it when you’re living in NYC.
After high school, I attended the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) where I majored in fashion design. I thought about keeping up with tennis, but there would have been a lot of travel involved, which would have made it difficult to balance my school work.
How do you play outside the gym? @remikranz and @jillkranz recently took their fitness skydiving 😎 How awesome is that? #functionalfitness #play #skydiving #beastriver #athlete #sweatriver #handstand #fitness #eastvillage #nyc #fitnyc #fitspo #fitfam #weightlifting #snatch #clean #jerk #usaw #deadlift #hspu #run #runnyc #paleo #nutrition #crossfitendurance #inversion
What do you do for a living?
I work at a small company where I design bras mostly for Walmart, JC Penny and other big stores. I’ve only been there a few months, but I’m enjoying it so far. They care a lot about their employees.
When did you first hear about CrossFit?
I didn’t know anything about CrossFit until I saw a Groupon for CrossFit East River in 2015. Jill and I were living on the Upper East Side, and I didn’t realize CFER was down in the East Village!
Do you remember what your first class was like?
Jill and I attended an evening Foundations class with you [Coach Brad]. We were so sore we had to wait a week to come back! We took nine foundations classes before we began attending regular WODs.
Do you remember what your first couple months at CFER were like?
The classes were big; I think a lot of other people bought the Groupon, too! I was very confused. I tried to remember the movements by watching videos of the day’s movements before class. The combination of watching videos and getting coached at night helped me eventually learn all the movements.
Free Community WOD today at 1:30pm with Eric. What’s the WOD? Let’s say its “FGB” inspired. See you in the gym! What is your usual class time?
You have accomplished a lot at CFER over the last three years. Do you have any accomplishments that stand out?
That I can now do a workout Rx’d! I remember the first time CFER programmed a workout that I could have done Rx’d, but I wasn’t able to come to class that day! I thought, “I’ll never be able to Rx it…” Now I can perform a lot of movements, and more regularly do the workouts.
Also, I’ve recently been enjoying squat snatches. They were tough for a long time. I just hit a PR of 115 pounds! I did the recent Weightlifting program, which was awesome and helped a lot. You realize that there are so many things that you need to work on; the early pull, the not using the legs…
What motivates and drives you to consistently attend classes?
It feels rewarding when you finish class. I feel accomplished afterwards. And no matter how good you get at CrossFit, the movements are still tough, it’s just a different type of tough.
Also, the people make class fun. Not matter how hard the workout is, you’re doing it with others. The other day, Jill and I were at open gym. We were going to do snatches and then a workout. Simon was there, and he had to do 10 rounds of HSPU, wall balls and burpees. I said 10 rounds, no way! But I didn’t want him to do it alone, so we all did it together. It was hard, but we got through it together.
What’s your favorite CrossFit movement?
Snatches are my current favorite.
I don’t like running or deadlifts. I did not attend yesterday’s Sweat River with all that running!
Do you have any advice for new CFER members?
Stick with it. CrossFit can be intimidating for a bit, but if you stick with it then you’ll know if you really want to join the cult or not
What is your favorite thing about NYC?
The food. The number and variety of great restaurants in NYC is awesome. This is why we started CrossFit!
If you could choose your last meal on earth what would it be?
Pasta Bolognese. Love the carbs. And ice cream, of course.
If you could sit down for a meal with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would it be?
Tina Fey. She’s a great actor and she’s hilarious.
